We all have a purpose in life, no matter what.
I remember Raissa as a cute little girl from school. I wasn't that close to her as she was from the year under ours, but I got to know her a bit when she joined the Citizen Army Training when my mates and I were officers. That's when I realised what a sweetheart she was. She was always one of those nice girls whose life, I thought, was all made up to go perfectly. Because she was really nice and you can't help but root for her. Her bedimpled face was very pleasant to look at and I don't think she ever knew how much she lights up a room with her smile.
Last year, a senseless bomb attack disrupted the Bar exams in the Philippines injuring almost 50 people. My dad, being a man of law himself, and I were Skyping about this when I stumbled upon a friend's photo in the news carrying a young girl. I immediately noticed the face, but I couldn't pinpoint who it was. And then it was all over the news. Raissa was one of the victims who unfortunately had the worst fate. She lost both her legs.
A year on, Raissa's battle with the blast has changed her life. But guess what. She's still in law school. She still sings for His greater glory. She's still adorably cute. She's now appeared in several TV shows but she's still humble and smiling. And dude get this - she still drives ;)
What she's gone through for the past year may have broken others. Why wouldn't it? These things rarely happen to people who were destined for success and Raissa defo had things going on for her. But this girl showed us a new meaning to 'amazing'. She may have lost her limbs but she's never lost her spirit. She has never lost her faith and has been steadfast, courageous and forgiving. She took every opportunity to spread the goodness of her blessings and the greatness of having faith. Instead of blaming others and caving in to nothingness, she has opened her heart to forgiveness and has continued to study law.
I have written a lot of tribute notes for people and I may have written a long entry already but truth be told, I can't find any words to express how greatly inspired I am by Rais. I can only pray for her success because the country needs a lot of young ones with her positive attitude. I believe that the Bar holds a spot for her in the future and I could only hope that she sees it through. I mean, come on - she's already doing us proud.
She has embraced life in a way that a lot of people are not able to, but seeing her do so makes me pray that everyone would. Because what I see now is not someone with a disability, but someone who's turned her life around for the better. A lady whose zest for life is a tribute to the sun and stars. A believer who is not afraid to be exposed and to expose her faith. A fighter whose spirit deserves much more than an international standing ovation. A girl who is blessed in more ways you can imagine, because what she has is the power to inspire everyone else around her.
