Pizza Pilgrims #ZomatoMeetup (Kingly Court): where we were Pizza Gods for a night

If I were a pizza, I think you should understand…

So the folks at Zomato invited a few pizza-loving bloggers to do a rather serious job at Pizza Pilgrims in Kingly Court; as “Pizza Gods”, we had to judge five of their chefs’ creations and choose which one gets to be their Guest Pizza of the Month. Tough job, aye?

Our host for the night was James Elliot, 1/2 of the tandem behind PP. He and his bro Thom went on an Italian pilgrimage in 2011 (in an Ape van which was also their portable pizza oven), sourcing the best ways to bring good Neapolitan pizza to us Londoners. Years later, the bros have released a book, aired a TV series, and embedded two shops in Soho. Imagine that.
Few minutes later, the first round of pizzas came out. But first, we shoot. Of course.

Pizza #1: The Mellow Yellow by Dario.

Topped with saffron-infused ricotta, fried courgettes, provola & Parmesan bread crumbs, this pizza almost sounded like a health kick and a half. The name does it justice; it’s darn yellow and the flavours are rather mellow. I’d’ve liked a bit more saffron flavour but overall it’s decent enough to gobble.

James brought out PP’s margherita to refresh our taste buds. I’ve never had pizza to cleanse my palate before and this takes the cake. Move over, sorbet.

Pizza #2: Fabio’s creation screaming Zucca, I am your father

This was the Godfather of all pizzas that night with its smooth pumpkin purée base and toppings of pancetta, rosemary and provola. The pumpkin gave it a nice hint of sweetness but the pork and rosemary balanced it out nicely. It screamed Autumn all over, and it’s the type you want to eat come sweater weather. It proved to be the group’s favourite.

Pizza #3: Bumblebee-Tuna by Giada

This was really not a crowd pleaser. It’s a margherita with tuna, sweetcorn, black olives, sliced red onion, parmesan & basil. Harsh as it may sound, it was essentially similar to those pizzas you get from those takeaway joints after a huge bender. Why, oh why?!

That dough, tho.

Pizza #4: Sausage & Mash by Alessio

White pizza with Italian fennel salsiccia, onion & porcini gravy, mashed potato, basil & parmesan. The flavours are wintry and comforting. Though I found this pizza quite heavy (hello carb on carb), it’s meaty and hearty and definitely my second favourite of the night.

Pizza #5: The P.L.T. by Matteo

P.L.T. as in Pretty Leafy Thing? No, Honey. More like Porchetta, Lettuce and Tomato. This is a conceptual take on BLT sarnies. It doesn’t have a purée base so the idea is to slice the pizza up and eat it… like a sandwich. Interesting concept… but if I wanted a sandwich surely I can just, uh, make one myself non?
Check out these megababes. Lauren & Andrea shooting up some pizza-slicing action.

Whilst we digest our pizza intake for the night, James brought out a round (or two… or three) of their homemade digestif.

Pococello is made with lemons from Amalfi and spirit from the UK. An excellent collaboration between Chase Vodka, Pizza Pilgrims and Terrone Coffee. Best served ice-cold, I admittedly enjoyed sipping this until the wee merry hours of the night.

But wait. There’s more.

We just had to have the nutella and salted ricotta pizza ring for dessert. This photo was clearly taken before I poked it hungrily. Shame I don’t have a photo of it whilst the chocolate oozed out like a bebe waiting for ten months (Frankie does, though). Don’t leave Pizza Pilgrims without having this. It’s delicious!

So Zucca, I am your Father won Guest Pizza of the Month. We were originally gunning for a September launch but because the pizza is all about pumpkin and Autumnal goodness, PP decided to have it in for the month of October (my favourite!)

Pizza Pilgrims will be screaming out Zucca, I am your father! from 5th October.
Seriously folks, this is one gorgeous pizza. Don’t miss out!
