With February looming around the corner and gift shops starting to stock on novelty items for V-Day, I can’t help but wonder if people still put effort in pressies themselves. You know, like scrapbooks. Or mixtapes.I actually didn’t think I’d post another one of these playlists because music can be very personal. But a few days ago I found myself sound-tripping over some old playlists from yesteryear. Whilst it was rather nice to hear good old favourites, I realise how significant they have been and how significant they still are.
Here are a few of my favourite significant love tunes you might want to consider putting on your mixtape.
Love is as unpredictable as the ocean but then again, a smooth sea never made a good sailor. But love takes courage and balls. Sometimes, all you have to do is find your anchor before you set sail.
The space between what’s wrong and right
is where you’ll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between your heart and mine
is the space we’ll fill with time
DMB is definitely one of my Top 3 favourite bands of all time and I’ve yet to catch them live. Whilst Crash Into Me is my favourite song ever, The Space Between has possibly the most honest achingly beautiful lyrics I’ve ever heard.
It’s a masterful melody when she calls out my name to me
As the world spins around her she laughs, rolls her eyes
And i feel like i’m falling but it’s no surprise
Coz i love her with all that i am and my voice shakes along with my hands
Cause it’s frightening to be swimming in this strange sea
But I’d rather be here than on land
Definitely one for the more sensitive types although I think everyone secretly wants to feel this “I look at you and I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot and won the lottery” type of love anyway.
Jason Mraz - Sleeping to Dream
Add to mixed tape: if you’re in a long distance relationship, or if you’ve not seen your partner in yonks
Killer lyrics:
I’m dreaming of sleeping next to you and feeling like a lost little boy in a brand new town
I’m counting my sheep and each one that passes is another dream to ashes and they all fall down.
And I lay me down tonight
I close my eyes
What a beautiful sight
When you miss people an awful lot because they’re far away. If I get to have one superpower, it would definitely be teleportation.
Josef Salvat - Open Season
Add on your mixed tape: if you feel like Romeo and Juliet
Killer lyrics:
Time is up, time to be leaving
Head on down this very arbitrary road
Armor up, and say your prayers
From underdogs and millionaires
I heard you better off on your own
But I ain’t gonna face this hunt alone
So I’ll be needing you
And I know you’ll be needing me too
We’re in this game together
It’s always good to know that someone’s got your back, and it’s always good to feel that no matter what people say and no matter the odds, you have someone who will go with you down the arbitrary road.
Miguel - Simple Things
Add to mix tape: if you’re a believer that love boils down to the basic things
Killer lyrics:
I don’t need a model
I don’t need a debutant
Just be a tough act to follow
You know, a free spirit, with a wild heart
Alright, I said I just want someone real, someone true
Because after all, the fancy restaurants and cars and blingage are material things you can’t bring with you to the grave. Love and life can be simple. You just need that one person who will make you feel like the greatest treasure of all.
Truth be told, you don’t need a special occasion for mixtapes. Music, like food, is definitely a universal language and I reckon people should share it more often.
