If you follow me on Instagram (aka my legit and only account @thegirlnextshore), then you would know that I, uh, like a nice jump shot.
Jump shots are really the best souvenirs for travel - they’re free, they’re fun to shoot and they’re good practice for your camera skills and physical stamina. But sometimes, like selfies, jump shots take more than one snap to get the right photo for the social networks.
Timing is key.
You need to set your shutter speed to get that height. Cos jump shots aren’t jump shots unless you take flight.
Case in point, this pre-jump shot in Saint Tropez:
Or this post-jump shot outside St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Honey, you have landed!
Or these post-jump “Staying Alive” series by the Koutoubia in Marrakech.
I never quite got it right by the Koutoubia!
You also have to scope your surroundings else you might blend in the background.
Here I am looking like a chameleon at the Jardin Majorelle in Morocco.
And looking ghostly in Marrakech.
Seriously, like Tyra Banks said, you gotta find the light (and I failed to find it by the Louvre)!
Sometimes you get the unfortunate positioning of people in the background.
Like this woman about to smell my armpit in Lausanne…
Or these chaps I almost kicked by the Kasbah in Marrakech and by the Colosseum in Rome.
Or this pre-jump photo of me seemingly showcasing my friend’s bosoms by Kensington Palace.
Distance is also key. You want to take a photo which showcases your jump as well as the sights.
Don’t get too far you’d blend in the background…
but don’t get too close you look like a mad person looking like you’re stopping the paps!
It’s also kinda hard when you’re working with props.
Here I am hoping to get THAT Mary Poppins umbrella shot (and failing) in Paris.
And here I am giving up on jumping with my bag in Saint Tropez.
Be careful of that sudden gush of wind as well.
Here I am almost getting knocked over in Cannes cos of that sudden breeze.
And HAIR I am by the Eiffel Tower. Shampoo advert, this is not!
Sometimes, it pays to have a little help from friends. Even when you end up getting photos cheesier than jumpshots. Here’s us looking like a fake pop band in Bournemouth!
Sometimes, I enjoy “forcing” people to take the jump, too!
OH… and don’t forget to watch out for your clothing as well. Many a time, I’ve taken photos of jump shots exposing my underwear. THOSE, OF COURSE WILL NEVER MAKE IT TO THE BLOG.
But most of the time, just jump for joy! My favourite jump shots are those that remind me of fantastic moments even they’re not picture perfect.
Here’s to more jump shots and more memories!

Teehee, thanks Nano! x
Lol’d at SO many of these, H! I feel I now truly appreciate the work that goes into those perfect jump shots. And bahahaha - the errant underwear shots ban comment brought a tear to my eye. More jump shots all over the world, please! x
Wahahaha! I should be banned in Amsterdam for showcasing a range of brassiere on occassions. Lol!
Your jump shots are really rather epic!
Haha, what a great idea for a post for the out takes theme Honey and one I could totally relate to, when I think about how many naff jump shots I’ve got on my hard drives where my feet were all over the place, I had no height, one foot was still on the ground etc etc. Hubby now has a cap on the total number of times he’s prepared to try and snap a jump shot for me!
BEST. POST. IN. THIS. LINKUP. PERIOD. I loled and marvelled at your talents at the same time.
TEEHEE. Thanks a lot Jaime! xxx
