Quick Eats: Brunch at Scarlett Green, Soho

Frankly, no one does brunch quite like Antipodeans. The Daisy Green Collection knows this, which is probably why their restaurants have been spreading like wild fired in the big smoke. Cue in the latest opening in Soho, Scarlett Green.

Setting up shop in what used to be TimberYard, the place looks like a hipster tropical paradise. Living plants in corners, bright pop art on the walls, accents of marble and gold - it’s as millennial as you can get. But it sets a nice ambience for quasi-morning people. I like it.

The menu is reflective of most Daisy Green restaurants (with some additions) which makes me smile. Ordering becomes easy especially if you’re familiar with the Greens.

I wanted to go for a vegan option as inspired by my recent discovery of London’s current inventive vegan scene so I asked for the broccoli and corn fritters, which they said was unavailable during my visit. I then switched to the aubergine fritter and asked for the eggs to be replaced by scrambled tofu. Unforch, they didn’t have this either.

So I went for the obvious decision and asked for bacon instead. And boy did they give me bacon.

The aubergine fritter (£13) itself was massive. Half an eggplant breaded with fairly seasoned batter served with half an avocado, a serving of corn salsa and greens. They went overboard with the bacon replacement (probably about 5 rashers there), which was nice enough as it added some salty element to the dish, which it slightly lacked. The kimchi sauce could do with a bit more heat as well. Overall, it was an okay dish.

The fancy bacon roll (£13.10) was a thing of beauty. You get poached eggs, crispy onions, a heap of bacon in a roti topped with Daisy Green’s infamous Holy F*ck Hollandaise.

I still don’t know what makes this sauce a holy f*cker, but hey ho.

Now frankly, I’m quite partial to a bacon roll. Nothing soaks up an early hangover better than a few crispy rashers wrapped in a soft bun. You don’t get the exact texture with the roti, but you do get the same satisfactory dirty feasting feeling. Except you pay a bit more and you get table service. Delicious altogether, and the random chillies wake you up like a slap on the face.

I liked the beef shin cigarillos (£7.6). Each roll was full to the brim with soft, juicy beef.

And whatever you say about tamarind, I think it’s delightful that they’ve used it as a sauce because the acidity married so well with the bold beef flavour. Yummers.

Verdict for Scarlett Green

Did I like it? Yes. Did I love it? No.

I like what the Daisy Green Collection is doing - upping the London brunch scene levels to something more fashionable, aspirational, and (let’s face it) ‘Grammable. The food is decent enough; the menu’s a fun one with its funky creations tried and tested to satisfy. Service is sunshiney and the price is quite right.

I’d probably go back, but perhaps to try the dinner/late night offering. They’re open til midnight six days a week. Promising.

Newbie Scarlett Green is alright, I suppose. Go with your friends for a quick, casual brunch. Then head off to Berners Tavern for some Japanese whisky.

Sounds like an interesting place. I’d be happy to try it for brunch although I bet my hubby would be disappointed by their holy f*ck sauce as he loves hot sauces! The hotter the better.

I kinda got that you weren’t in love with your restaurant experience. I’m not vegan or vegetarian but I do love creative takes on no meat options. That said, I was hoping to see a picture of broccoli and corn fritters and scrambled tofu. Bacon is always welcome though right? I like that the place has plants and the high ceilings make the place look open and airy!

That food looks amazing. We don’t go out to eat very often. Most times we are totally disappointed. This looks like somewhere we would enjoy eating. Sounds like lots of tasty options to choose from.

I do love a good brunch, and the standards in London can be especially high. I’ve tried the Breakfast Club followed by champagne at the Shard, so a total tourist. But getting insight into a place like this is helpful for a visitor like me.

I appreciate your honesty here! The dishes do look good however, I do understand that it’s sometimes most the looks. I still got hungry though! And I want to visit London, again (and again).

Hipster tropical paradise is a great description 🙂 The place looks nice although it is quite surprising that they didn’t offer any veg options. Great post anyway!

I have to be honest and say it doesn’t really sound like my kinda eatery. I think the decor would put me off for starters. That’s not good, is it? 🙁

Thanks for the detailed review. I actually kind of like the industrial modern feel, but that’s probably cause the brunch places I frequent are quite boring-looking. ha! The bacon roll looks sooo good.

Looks like a great restaurant with great food. But as you know looks are deceiving. I hope the next time you go you’ll have a much better experience.

  23. 26th September 2018 / 10:44 pm

This looks like it was an amazing meal! I feel like I often have a similar experience at restaurants - it was good, but not necessarily worth all the money. That’s why we cook at home so much, haha!
